9th Grade English Language Arts Curriculum

9th Grade students should know these Language Arts skills:

  1. Learn to identify the features and purpose of myths, as well as contrasting myths from different cultures.
  2. Learn how to interpret similes, analyze figurative language and use prior knowledge to make predictions.
  3. Researching and writing about mythical characters.
  4. Explore the different thematic links in the texts they read such as love, beauty, family, freedom, friendship and overall human nature.
  5. Read and understand increasingly challenging texts that build knowledge in history, science and other subjects.
  6. Compose texts that present multiple points of view.
  7. Conduct research and select information from multiple sources to support their arguments.
  8. Continue learning best practices for grammar and also expanding their vocabulary, both written and orally.
  9. Constantly read and analyze classical books, short stories, poetry and more.

9th Grade students should have these Reading skills:

  1. Decipher elements of the plot arch, setting, narrative, character development, Point-of-View, and more.
  2. Accurately identify the author’s point of view in a story.
  3. Adequately identify and explain the use of allegory and satire in novels.
  4. Achieve clear understanding of figurative language, form and perspective.
  5. Develop skills to evaluate materials for accuracy and discussion techniques.
  6. Read between the lines and notice subtext, worldview, and implications.
  7. Learn to track a plotline from the inciting moment to the climax and denouement.
  8. Explore the meaning of the author’s voice, choice of narrative and POV, and use of character development.

9th Grade students should have these Writing skills:

  1. Use different traits for writing, including organization, content, voice and word choice.
  2. Use figurative language to compose their own poetry.
  3. Develop and support ideas with specific examples, and citing information from reliable sources.
  4. Formulate appropriate questions and paraphrase problems.
  5. Identify areas of improvement in their own writing.
  6. Understand proper composition skills.
  7. Avoid plagiarism and accurately give credit to whom credit is due.

 

9th Grade students should have these Grammar skills:

  1. Understand and apply the proper grammar rules in their writing (pronoun-antecedent, apostrophes, etc.)
  2. Recognize run-on sentences, and sentence fragments and avoid them.
  3. Successfully diagram sentences.
  4. Subordinate clauses
  5. Participle phrases
  6. Relative clauses
