Core Concepts

Capital letters are used to begin sentences, proper nouns, and titles. In English, we use a capital letter at the start of a sentence to show that it is a new idea. This is called a capital letter or uppercase letter.

Imagine you are writing a story about your friend's birthday party. You would start each new sentence with a capital letter to show that it is a new idea.

Example: "My friend Emma had a birthday party." "She invited all her friends." "We played games and ate cake."

Notice how each new sentence starts with a capital letter.

Common Misconceptions

  • Some students may think that capital letters are only used at the start of sentences, but not in the middle.
  • Others may think that capital letters are only used for important words, like "President" or "King".
  • However, capital letters are used for many other things, like proper nouns, titles, and at the start of sentences.

Exam Tips

  • Make sure to read the question carefully and understand what is being asked.
  • Use a capital letter at the start of each sentence, unless it is a continuation of the previous sentence.
  • Use capital letters for proper nouns, like names and places.
  • Use capital letters for titles, like book titles or movie titles.
