In recent years, many police departments have shifted from a traditional policing approach to a community policing approach. The basic difference between these two strategies is that traditional policing approaches focus on detecting crimes, while community policing approaches focus more on crime prevention. The basic argument against traditional policing strategies is that they focus on responding to calls that take place after a crime has already occurred. This type of strategy may effectively detect crimes, but does little to prevent them. Research has shown that with a traditional strategy, even increasing the total number of officers on duty does not lower the crime rate or increase the proportion of solved crimes.    
Community policing strategies, on the other hand, attempt to increase the quality of service that police officers provide by actively involving the community in preventing crime. With this strategy, police officers develop close ties to the community in an effort to understand their needs and concerns. This allows officers to customize their service to meet the needs of their particular community, which leads to greater efficiency and helps to build the community’s trust in the police.
