How solar thermal energy works:
Capture sunlight: Solar thermal technologies capture sunlight using flat or parabolic collectors. These collectors use mirrors and lenses to concentrate the sunlight.
Heat fluid: The captured sunlight heats a fluid, which is then transferred to heat water.
Produce steam: The heated water produces steam.
Spin a turbine: The steam spins a turbine, producing mechanical energy. 

Three main types of concentrating solar thermal power systems:
Linear concentrating systems, which include parabolic troughs and linear Fresnel reflectors
Solar power towers
Solar dish/engine systems
