About Rip Van Winkle:

'Rip Van Winkle was one of those happy, foolish people, of well-oiled nature, who take the world easy and would rather starve than work. The great error in Rip’s makeup was his aversion, his great dislike of profitable work. He would hold a heavy fishing rod all day without a single nibble. He would carry a heavy gun all day to shoot a few squirrels. He would never refuse to help a neighbor even in the hardest work. The women of the village, too, used him to run their errands and do odd jobs. In short, he would attend to anybody’s business but his own.
