Ordering numbers is an important skill for the following reasons: you need to be able to arrange numbers in ascending and descending order, and you need to be able to understand what is meant by the magnitude (size) of a number.

Comparing and ordering numbers is useful when listing them by size. A good understanding of the value of a figure means you can compare one number with another and put several numbers in order. For example, a six in the hundreds column is worth 600 but in the thousands column it is worth 6,000.

To compare and order numbers, you'll need to know what size they are. You'll have heard some new words (or terms) relating to math, but there are also mathematical symbols that you will need to be familiar with.
