The Earth is made of rock. Underneath the surface this rock is very hot. Sometimes this hot rock comes out in volcanoes. The rock can move. When the rock moves everything shakes and there is an earthquake. There are lots of different types of rocks. Some of the rocks turn to mud or sand. Some of the land is covered in soil. Plants can grow in the soil.
