Why would you paraphrase information instead of directly quoting it in your essay or research project?

When writing an essay or other type of writing, the student needs to determine where they will get the information from. They don't always need to research the information on a computer or in a library. Sometimes, they may need to use their own experiences and opinions for their writing assignment. It all depends on the topic.
