Well, the English language does not have the most sensible spelling in the world. This is due to many reasons: often the pronunciation of a word changed but the spelling remained the same; sometimes it is because English words have been borrowed from other languages; many times it is because several letters (or letter combinations) in English can make a variety of different sounds.
