Academic & Assessment Terms

Bibliography – A list of sources you read but didn’t necessarily cite in your work.
Formative Assessment – Work done for feedback only, not for final grades.
Summative Assessment – Work that counts toward your final mark.
Plagiarism – Presenting someone else’s work as your own (serious academic offense!).
Turnitin – Online tool for submitting assignments and checking for plagiarism.
References – A list of all sources you have cited in your work.
Learning Outcome – What you are expected to learn from a module.


Modules & Courses

Module Tutor – The go-to person for academic help in a specific module.
Personal Tutor – A tutor who provides general support during your studies.
Module Outline – A summary of a module, including content and assessment details.
Module Evaluation Questionnaire – A feedback form for sharing your opinion on a module.
Elective Module – A module you choose from any subject (within timetable limits).
Optional Module – A module you choose from a set list.
Course / Programme – Sometimes used interchangeably to mean your degree or study path.


Degree Levels & Progression

Classification – The grading system for an undergraduate degree (e.g., First, 2:1).
Level 0Foundation year before starting a degree.
Level 4First year of undergraduate study.
Level 5Second year of undergraduate study.
Level 6Final year of undergraduate study.
Level 7Master’s level study.
Level 8Doctoral (PhD) level study.


Study Adjustments & Special Circumstances

Extenuating Circumstances – Personal issues (e.g., illness, bereavement) that can justify deadline extensions.
Interruption – A temporary break from studies due to personal reasons.
WithdrawalLeaving university permanently without returning.
Changes to Study – Switching course, mode of study (full-time ↔ part-time), etc.
Special Arrangements – Extra support for students with disabilities or additional needs.


Study Resources & University Systems

Library Catalogue – An online tool to find books, journals, and study materials.
VLE (Virtual Learning Environment) – Online platform for lecture notes, assignments, and materials.
Portal – A student website with key info (timetables, grades, announcements).
Programme Handbook – Your ultimate guide to your degree/course details.


Appeals, Re-submissions & Student Support

Appeal – The process of challenging a grade if procedures were not followed correctly.
Re-submission – The opportunity to redo a failed assignment (mark is usually capped at 40%).
Staff Student Liaison – A meeting where students give feedback on their course.
AlumniGraduates of the university who have completed their studies.


Recognition of Prior Learning

APL (Accreditation of Prior Learning) – Recognition of previous learning (both certified and experiential).
APCL (Accreditation of Prior Certified Learning) – Recognition of formal qualifications you’ve earned before.
APEL (Accreditation of Prior Experiential Learning) – Recognition of learning gained through experience.
