Once your child has successfully applied and been accepted for an apprenticeship, there are important final steps to complete before they officially start. Here’s everything they need to know:
Before beginning the apprenticeship, your child will sign a formal apprenticeship agreement with their employer. This is like an employment contract and outlines key details, including:
✔ Length of employment – How long they will be an apprentice. ✔ Training details – What skills and qualifications they will gain. ✔ Pay & working conditions – Salary, hours, and benefits. ✔ Study time allowance – Typically one day per week for coursework. ✔ Mentorship provision – Who will guide them during the apprenticeship. ✔ Apprenticeship framework or standard – The criteria they must meet.
Tip: Ensure your child reads the contract carefully and asks questions before signing!
Minimum Apprenticeship Wage (as of April 2022): £4.81 per hour for apprentices under 19 (or in their first year). Higher wages apply after the first year or for older apprentices.
✔ Apprentices are paid for both work and training hours. ✔ Payment frequency varies – weekly, fortnightly, or monthly. ✔ Holiday entitlement – 20 days per year + bank holidays. ✔ Breaks – At least 20 minutes for every 6 hours worked. ✔ Working hours – Max 48 hours per week (including study time). ✔ Fair treatment – No discrimination based on gender, race, religion, or age.
Tip: Some companies offer higher wages and better benefits to attract the best applicants – always check!
Apprenticeships involve regular progress checks to ensure both the apprentice and employer are fulfilling expectations.
✔ Check-in meetings – Held with both the employer & training provider. ✔ Assessments – Performance is reviewed against set standards. ✔ Extra support – If struggling, apprentices should speak with mentors, HR, or training providers.
Tip: Encourage your child to actively engage in training & reviews – this could lead to a permanent job offer!
?Why did you choose a degree apprenticeship? “The money was a big factor – I didn’t want to graduate in debt! I also knew I could secure a job if I impressed my employer.”
What’s a typical week like? “Every Wednesday is a study day, and I spend 6 weeks per year at university.”
What was the hardest part of the application? “The assessment day was tough, especially the 15-minute presentation on the future of structural engineering. I did a lot of research!”
Any tips? “Practise for the assessment day! I rehearsed in front of a mirror and family. Research the company and prepare for common interview questions.”
What’s next? “I’ve secured a permanent role after my apprenticeship, and I’m excited to grow my career!”
Lesson: Preparation and confidence are key!
✔ Read and sign the apprenticeship agreement. ✔ Check salary, working hours, holidays, and benefits. ✔ Understand study requirements & support available. ✔ Prepare for induction day – know company policies & expectations. ✔ Stay engaged in training and review meetings. ✔ Be proactive, ask questions & take initiative!
Apprenticeships provide structured learning & real-world experience. Check pay, benefits & working conditions before signing the agreement. Stay committed – training reviews help with progression. Apprentices who perform well often get permanent job offers!
