Key Considerations for Choosing Post-16 Study Options

1️⃣ What Your Child Enjoys & Excels At

✔ Subjects they enjoy will keep them engaged & motivated.
✔ Their GCSE performance can indicate strengths.
✔ Do they prefer theoretical learning (A Levels/IB) or practical coursework (BTEC/T Levels)?

2️⃣ What They Want to Do Next

Has a career path in mind? Choose subjects that align with it.
Still unsure? Keep options open with a broad mix of subjects.
Apprenticeships & vocational routes can be ideal for practical learners.

3️⃣ University Preferences & Subject Combinations

Russell Group universities prefer “facilitating subjects” (maths, sciences, English, history, geography, languages).
Some universities don’t accept BTECs, while others do. Check entry requirements!
Be cautious of taking too many similar subjects (e.g., business + economics may not count separately).

4️⃣ Where to Study: Sixth Form vs. College

✅ Staying at the Same School (Sixth Form)

✔ Familiar environment & teachers.
✔ Smaller classes & more guidance.
✔ Easier transition to A Levels.
But: May have limited subject choices.

✅ Moving to a Different School’s Sixth Form

✔ New environment = fresh motivation.
✔ Potentially more subject variety.
✔ Increased academic competition.
But: Needs good adaptation skills.

✅ Studying at a College

Greater subject variety, including vocational courses.
✔ More independence (suits mature students).
✔ Often better facilities for practical subjects (e.g., engineering, media).
But: Less structured support compared to school.
