A Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA) is an entry-level ophthalmology professional. The Ophthalmic Assistant generates important preliminary information to be used by the ophthalmologist; reviews patient status and performs medical tests. The COA certification exam covers 22 specific content areas, is three hours long, and includes nearly 200 multiple-choice questions.There are three levels of certification: COA (Certified Ophthalmic Assistant), COT (Certified Ophthalmic Technician), and COMT (Certified Ophthalmic Technologist).
