Capacitance is the ability of a circuit or component to store and collect energy in the form of an electrical charge. Capacitors are devices that store energy and come in many shapes and sizes. 

The capacitance of a capacitor is the ratio of the maximum charge that can be stored in a capacitor to the applied voltage across its plates. In other words, capacitance is the largest amount of charge per volt that can be stored on the device. 

Capacitors store energy by holding apart pairs of opposite charges. The simplest design for a capacitor is a parallel plate, which consists of two metal plates with a gap between them. 
The capacitance of a capacitor can be determined by measuring the amount of charge stored on each plate when it is connected to a battery with a certain voltage. For example, if a capacitor is connected to a 9 volt battery and measures that it stores 9 coulombs of charge, its capacitance would be 1 farad.
