Steam power plants: These plants consist of a boiler, steam turbine, generator, and other auxiliaries. The boiler generates steam at high pressure and high temperature by burning fossil fuels (such as coal, oil, or natural gas) or by using nuclear energy. The high-pressure steam is directed into a turbine, where the force of the steam's high-speed flow turns the blades.
Combined cycle power plants: These plants use the waste heat from a gas turbine to drive a steam turbine. The hot exhaust generated from the gas turbine is used to create steam, and a boiler which then spins the steam turbine blades with their own drive shaft that turns the generator. 

The gas turbine drives an electrical generator while the gas turbine exhaust is used to produce steam. in an HX, called a heat recovery steam generator (HRSG), to supply a steam turbine whose output provides the means to generate more electricity.
