A men’s prison is a very macho environment. Any appearance of effeminate behavior on the part of an inmate is likely to subject that inmate to harassment. Overt homosexual behavior may pose a real danger to the safety of homosexual inmates. Corrections Officers must be alert to the possibility of antagonism toward homosexuals and must defuse dangerous encounters.Inmate White is a slightly built individual who tends to swing his hips when he walks and who avoids groups of inmates who brag about their sexual prowess. For the most part, other inmates have ignored White in the three months he has been in the cell block. Last week, Inmate Ford was transferred into the cell block. Ford has no effeminate mannerisms, but he has clearly been attracted to White, and the feeling seems to be mutual. Of course the other inmates have noticed, and all Corrections Officers are on edge.
