The Commissioner of Corrections may permit any prisoner confined in a state prison, excepting one awaiting the sentence of death, to attend the funeral of his or her father, mother, child, brother, sister, husband, or wife, within the state, or to visit such relative during his or her illness if death is imminent. Any expenses incurred under these provisions, with respect to any prisoner, shall be deemed an expense of maintenance of the prison and be paid from monies available therefore; but the warden, if the rules and regulations of the Commissioner of Corrections shall so provide, may allow the prisoner or anyone in his behalf to reimburse the state for such expense.Martha, who is serving a sentence for armed robbery, receives word that her mother, who has been undergoing treatment for cancer, has taken a sudden turn for the worse and is not expected to survive.
