Block ciphers are different from stream ciphers, which can operate on a single bit of plaintext at a time. Most modern block ciphers are designed to encrypt data in fixed-size blocks of either 64 or 128 bits. 
DES is a symmetric key encryption algorithm, which means it uses the same secret key for the encryption and decryption of information. However, DES uses a 56-bit key, which makes it vulnerable to brute force attacks. For this reason, the DES cipher is not recommended for use. 
DES is based on the Feistel block cipher, called LUCIFER, developed in 1971 by IBM cryptography researcher Horst Feistel. DES uses 16 rounds of the Feistel structure, using a different key for each round.
