Window: Central Govt recruitment | Sections you must master: QA (Maths) • Reasoning • English • General Awareness (GA)
Pattern (what matters for strategy):

  • CGL (current scheme): Tier-I (screening) → Tier-II (Paper-I mandatory; modules/sections + Computer Knowledge & DEST; Paper-II JSO, Paper-III AAO); −1 per wrong answer in Paper-I Section-I/II & Module-I of Section-III; −0.50 per wrong in Papers II & III; Computer Knowledge qualifying
  • CHSL (current scheme): Tier-I (screening) → Tier-II with 3 sections (Math+Reasoning / English+GA / Computer+Skill/Typing); −1 per wrong in Section-I, Section-II, and Module-I of Section-III; Computer Knowledge qualifying

Must-do topics (80/20 coverage)

Quantitative Aptitude (QA)

  • Arithmetic core: % & %-points, ratio/proportion, averages & weighted mean, mixture/alligation, profit-loss-discount, SI/CI, TSD (incl. relative/avg speed), time–work & pipes.
  • Algebra & Numbers: linear/quad eqns, inequalities (sign-flip), absolute value, HCF/LCM, remainders/mod (incl. negatives), divisibility cycles, base/last digit.
  • Geometry/Mensuration: triangles (similarity, Pythagorean triples), circles (angles/arcs), polygons; 3D (TSA/CSA/Volume for cuboid/cyl/cone/sphere/frustum).
  • Data Interpretation: tables/line/bar/pie, stacked charts, dual axes; TAUSL (Title–Axes–Units–Scale–Legend).

Reasoning (GI/GI)

  • Verbal: analogies, classification, series (letter/number), coding-decoding, direction, blood relations, order & ranking, syllogism (Venn), statement–assumption/ conclusion, cause–effect.
  • Non-verbal: patterns, mirror/water images, paper folding/cutting.
  • Puzzles: linear/circular seating, distributions & grids (who–what–when).

English

  • Usage & Grammar: S-V agreement, pronouns/antecedents, modifiers (place them!), tense & sequence, parallelism/comparisons, prepositions/idioms; active↔passive; direct↔indirect.
  • Vocab: synonyms/antonyms, one-word substitutions, cloze, commonly confused words.
  • Comprehension: main idea vs detail, inference, tone; para-jumbles; error spotting; sentence improvement.

General Awareness (GA)

  • Static: History (Modern freedom struggle), Polity (Constitution, Parliament, bodies), Geography (physio of India, rivers, soils, climate), Economy basics (inflation, budgeting), Science (everyday physics/chem/bio).
  • Current (last 12 months): schemes/ministries, reports/indices (publisher + India rank/score), space/defence, environment treaties, awards/sports, important days, maps & places.

Top traps (and quick fixes)

  • QA: averaging percentages without weights; mixing % change with percentage-points; forgetting to flip inequalities when ×/÷ negative; extraneous roots after squaring; unit slips in mensuration.
  • Reasoning: solving in head; not drawing the base diagram; ignoring “exactly one” vs “at least one”.
  • English: choosing options that “sound right” but break grammar/logic; modifiers far from noun; faulty comparisons (“A’s salary higher than B”).
  • GA: confusing publisher/ministry for reports/schemes; date drift; map mismatches (park–state–river).
  • DI: reading rates as totals; skipping TAUSL; misreading dual/log axes.

Time split (tier-agnostic tactics you can apply)

  • Pass-1 (≈60–65% time): harvest singles—QA arithmetic & algebra one-steps; quick Reasoning; English error-spot/cloze; sure GA & map one-liners.
  • Pass-2 (≈30–35%): DI set you like; reasoning grid/seating; medium algebra/geometry; RC passage.
  • Buffer (final 5–8 min): re-read NOT/INCORRECT stems; unit/scale audits; bubble check.
(Within CGL/CHSL Tier-II modules, apply the same two-pass logic inside each section. Respect on-screen section timers when applicable.)

Last-48h checklist

  • QA: 60 mixed (40 arithmetic, 20 algebra/geo), plus 2 DI sets; update an error-tag log (Percent-Base / Sign / Units / Diagram).
  • Reasoning: 3 seating/grids + 1 mixed verbal set (syllogism/coding/directions).
  • English: 50 error-spot + 30 cloze; 2 short RCs; one-page rule sheet (SVA, modifiers, parallelism, punctuation).
  • GA: 12-month capsule: schemes (ministry–benefit–launch), reports (publisher–indicator–India rank & score), maps (parks/rivers/UNESCO).
  • Computer (Tier-II Module-I): basics of OS, MS-Office, internet, email, shortcuts (qualifying but don’t blank it).

Quick frames (carry card)

  • TAUSL for any chart: Title • Axes • Units • Scale • Legend.
  • Alligation: ratio of quantities = cross-difference from target.
  • Inequalities: multiply/divide by negative ⇒ flip sign.
  • Syllogism: Venn first; “some” ≠ “all”; necessary vs sufficient.
  • RC: CEI—Claim → Evidence (line no.) → Insight.
  • Schemes/Reports card: Ministry/Publisher → Objective/Indicator → Year → India rank and score → One hook (map/stat).
  • Computer (qualifying): file types, basic shortcuts, email etiquette, spreadsheet formulas gist.

Speed tactics (during the paper)

  • QA: pick smart numbers (base 100) on %/ratio; back-solve on eqns/mixtures; bound answers to kill options.
  • Reasoning: one clean template diagram; clone for branches; when stuck, flip to contrapositive or switch to grid view.
  • English: scan split points across options; fix grammar/logic before style; prefer text-backed choices in RC.
  • GA: eliminate by impossible publisher/ministry/date/unit; protect negatives—skip speculative “feels right”.
  • General: cap singles @ 60–75 s; cap a reasoning/DI set @ 8–10 min before bailing.

Exam-day mini-plan

  • 3-min warm-up: 6 mental-math + 1 tiny grid + 4 GA one-liners.
  • Order: Reasoning & QA singles → English quick wins → DI set → RC → GA leftovers.
  • Keep a danger list on the sheet: NOT/EXCEPT, unit/scale, multi-statement—revisit in buffer.
  • For CHSL/CGL Tier-II, remember Computer module is qualifying; DEST/Typing must be cleared for relevant posts.

Pattern receipts (official SSC)

  • CGL 2023 Notice: Tier-II Paper-I sections/modules; −1/−0.5 negative marking; Computer Knowledge qualifying; DEST/CPT rules.
  • CGL Paper-I sessioning note (how sections auto-close): official clarification.
  • CHSL 2022/2023 Notices: Tier-II sections & modules; −1 negative marking in Section-I/II/Module-I; Computer module qualifying; Skill/Typing specifics.
