The 80286 CPU has a 24-bit address bus and can address 16 Mbytes of physical memory. The 80286 CPU and the supporting operating system manage the virtual memory process. Virtual memory is a large logical memory space that is not actually available. Large application programs can be executed by dividing them into smaller segments. 
The 80286 has an integrated segmentation unit and protected modes to allow multitasking OSes and more memory (up to 16MB). It was used for that purpose in early versions of OS/2 and Windows.
