Place value is about the position of a number. For example, in 83,659 the 9 is in the ones' place; the 5 is in the tens' place; the 6 is in the hundreds' place; the 3 is in the thousands' place; the 8 is in the ten thousands' place. We work out the value of a digit within a longer number by reading from right to left – NOT left to right.
