The moment of inertia is calculated using the formula I = Σ miri2, where I is the moment of inertia and Σ miri2 is the sum of the product of the mass of each particle with the square of its distance from the axis of rotation. 
The moment of inertia depends on the distribution of mass in an object. The greater the distance the mass is from the center of rotation, the greater the moment of inertia. 

There are three types of moment of inertia:
Mass moment of inertia
Area moment of inertia
Polar moment of inertia 

The polar moment of inertia is a measure of an object's capacity to oppose or resist torsion when some amount of torque is applied to it on a specified axis. Torsion is the twisting of an object due to an applied torque.
