Water softening is a process that removes calcium, magnesium, and sometimes iron ions from water. These ions make it difficult for products with other positively charged ions to dissolve in the water. Water softening is usually achieved using lime softening or ion-exchange resins. It can also be accomplished using nanofiltration or reverse osmosis membranes.
