Introduction

First grade (also called Grade One, called Year 2 in England or Primary 3 in Scotland) is the first grade in elementary school.

It is the first school year after kindergarten in Canada and the USA. Children are usually 6–7 years old in this grade.

 

1st Grade Curriculum

A first grade student learns these skills:

  1. Become an independent reader, improve their phonics, phonemic awareness, and comprehension
  2. Grammar skills including capitalization and punctuation
  3. Handwriting skills, writing their name as well as simple words and sentences
  4. Math skills such as adding and subtracting single digit or small numbers, greater than and less than concepts, identifying patterns and shapes
  5. How to make scientific observations and record these in writing, pictures and/or graphs.
  6. Symbols that represent the U.S.
  7. Important figures and events in U.S. history
  8. The difference between living and nonliving things
  9. The importance of the sun in relation to Earth and living things

1st Grade Math Curriculum
1st Graders should know these Math skills:

  1. Be able to count, identify and write numbers
  2. Perform one-digit addition and subtraction
  3. Have an understanding of quantity (more and less)
  4. Familiarity with patterns and shapes
  5. Knowledge of place value (ones, tens, etc.)

 

1st Graders should be able to know these skills in Math:

  1. Count to 100; county by 5s and 10s to 100; count by 2s to 40
  2. Represent numbers on a number line
  3. Add and subtract 2-digit numbers
  4. Write the date; tell time; read a calendar
  5. Count and create coin combinations; add and subtract money
  6. Identify, sort and classify 2-dimensional shapes
  7. Understanding the value of money

1st Grade Language Arts Curriculum
1st Graders should already be knowing:

The alphabet: Students should be able to recite the alphabet, recognize all the letters, and know the sounds they make.
Pre-reading: Students should be familiar with the parts of a book, as well as the roles of an author and illustrator; blend sounds, such as consonant-vowel-consonant combinations; be able to read the kindergarten sight/Dolch words.
Writing: Students should be able to write all the letters of the alphabet in lower- and upper-case; write their first and last name; spell shorter words correctly, and longer words phonetically.


1st Graders should know these Reading skills:

  1. Increase vocabulary as they blend consonant sounds, vowel and consonant digraphs, and more.
  2. Read simple stories fluently and independently.
  3. Retell the main idea of a story and answer questions about the text.
  4. Identify parts of a story or book.
  5. Know the names and sounds of all the consonants and vowels.
  6. Understand phonics concepts such as consonant combinations.
  7. Develop an understanding of composition.


1st Graders should know these Writng skills:

  1. Write from top to bottom, left to right while using spacing between words.
  2. Correctly write 3- 4-letter words and longer words phonetically.
  3. Write simple sentences and short stories or paragraphs in chronological order.


1st Graders should know these Grammar skills:

  1. Use correct capitalization and punctuation.
  2. Understand and identify the parts of speech and types of sentences.
  3. Identify compound words and distinguish between proper and possessive nouns.

1st Grade Science Curriculum

1st Graders should be starting to learn about: 

  1. Life science (plants, animals, habitats)
  2. Classification of animals and different animal habitats
  3. Distinguishing between living and nonliving things
  4. Earth and space science (solar system and beyond)
  5. States of matter (solid, liquid, gas)
  6. Type of light energy; the characteristic of sound energy (pitch, volume, etc.)
  7. Earth/space science including the water cycle and weather
  8. The different parts and functions of plants

 

1st Graders should be able to:

  1. Distinguish between the states of matter and how they can change
  2. Ask scientific questions, observe using their senses, create hypothesis, draw conclusions, share data
  3. Distinguish between living and nonliving things
  4. Understand the water cycle, weather patterns, and seasons
  5. Identify the different parts and functions of plants
  6. Classify animals and the different habitats they live in
