Demographic issues - Around this time there was a sharp decline in the number of people who identified themselves as 'working class' -> class dealignment - This may have eroded Labour's vote - Conversely, the size of the middle classes were growing which could have enabled the conservatives to secure more votes Valence and other issues - Image of Labour had suffered in the election lead up - It was seen that the party of the trade unions and trade unions were unpopular at the time - The government of James Callaghan was seen as weak against the unions Party leaders - James Callaghan, who was the incumbent PM, had a far better image than Thatcher - He was seen as likeable reliable whilst she was seen as posh and distant - Thatcher was also an unpopular eduction secretary previously Turnout - 76% - A little down over past trends, largely due to abstentions by the working class and union members, Labours core voters Political issues - UK economy was in a poor state, high inflation and growing unemployment - Key issue was arguably the power of trade unions as in the winter of 1978-9 there were a number of strikes by public sector workers -> led to bins not being emptied, shortages of power and dislocation of public transport - 'The winter of discontent' Outcome - Thatcher surprisingly won a considerable victory and the Conservatives held power for the next 18 years
