1. How well are the different regions represented? - Representation of constituencies is strong - Every constituency has their own MP who represents their interests, they are expected to oppose policy which may harm them and publicise both their problems and achievements - Many MPs have a regional outlook,eg depressed industrial areas and rural farming regions 2. How well are the various areas of society represented? - Turning to the HOL, the representation of interests is given great importance - When scrutinising legislation, the lords can take into account the interests of business groups, professionals, workers in a certain industry etc - They are better represented in the Lords as the power of the whips tends to prevail in the Commons 3. How politically representative is Parliament? - No doubt that political representation is incredibly distorted - This is largely because of the FPTP system and the way it converts votes into seats Anomolies include: - 2015 UKIP got 12.6% of the vote yet only 1 seat - 2015 SNP won only 50% of the popular vote in Scotland yet got 95% seats - 2017 Conservatives gained 5.5% of the vote yet lost 13 seats 4. How socially representative of the whole nation is the UK Parliament? - Not the easiest comparison as it should be for example, assumed that the average MP was older than the average person as they are expected to be wise - We would also hope that MPs have higher educational attainment than the average citizen - Only 32% of MPs are women as opposed to 50% average - Only 10% of MPs are an ethnic minority as opposed to 15% average - There are improvements coming though, eg there are now 45 LGBT members in the Commons
