The rational choice model of voting behaviour suggests that some voters, who are not especially committed to one party or another and who do not hold firm and extreme political views -> make a rational choice at each election and base their vote on that - Sometimes described as issue voting - Among rational choice / issue voters different political issues are more salient (important) than others - Salient issues are issues that voters will base their votes on - In 2015 these the economy, immigration, the NHS and then education -> conservatives are more trusted with the top 2 and hence won the election - 2 variants of rational choice voting are 'expressive' and 'instrumental' voting, if we assume voters rationally seek to derive some benefit from their choice of party then we can identify 2 types of benefit: 1. a voter will derive satisfaction if they vote for a party that will benefit society as a whole -> altrustic / expressive voting 2. the other kind of benefit is to choose a party whose policies are likely to favour one's self -> instrumental voting
