1. The Constitutional Reform Act 2005 What did it aim to do What was the key component Why was it important

This Act was designed to improve and guarentee the independence of the UK judiciary - Before the Act it had always been claimed that the senior judges in the UK were independent of political circumstances but there was mixed evidence as to if that was the case - The central feature of the act was the establishment of the Supreme Court - Before the Supreme Court was established it had been the HOL that was the highest court which was also apart of the legislature - This was clearly a conflict of interests and almost unheard of in the modern world
Hybrid system combining FPTP and a proportional representation system - Used in Scotland, Wales, Germany and the Greater London Assembly - A proportion, varying from country to country, of the seats is awarded through FPTP -> the rest are awarded on a regional list system, this means every voter has 2 votes -> one for a constituency candidate and the other is from a choice of party lists - So, some of elected representatives have a constituency to look after whilst others do not - AMS is something of a compromise, desinged to make a system partly proportional whilst also preserving the idea of parliamentary constituencies
This period is often described as one of 'prime ministerial government' - PMs were expected to dominate the government, there had to be a cabinet to legitimise decisions but it was not expected of them that the cabinet would collectively support the PM - Individual ministers may be powerful but the cabinet as a whole was not so much 3 prominant styles of prime ministerial dominanation: - Harold Wilson (1964-70/1974-76) manipulated cabinet by controlling the agenda and discussions, and by reaching agreements with ministers outside the meetings - Margeret Thatcher (1979-1990) dominated the cabinet by the force of her will and by ruthlessly removing her opponents - Tony Blair (1997-2007) marginalised cabinet, he adopted a style known as 'sofa politics' whereby he would develop ideas with a few advisers and senior ministers outside the cabinet in informal discussions and present the cabinet with a fait accompli

Voting turnout among the young at both the Scottish independence referendum and the EU referendum were high according to pollsters 3. 2017 snap election had a relatively high turnout for the young, 54% of 18-24 year olds voted leaving Labour with a surge in support
