1. Why is entrenchment in the UK impossible? How can the constitution be amended? An example __

1. LDs and the Green Party are reporting rises in memberships, largely among the young. After 2015 GE and Brexit 2. Voting turnout among the young at both the Scottish independence referendum and the EU referendum were high according to pollsters 3. 2017 snap election had a relatively high turnout for the young, 54% of 18-24 year olds voted leaving Labour with a surge in support
It is not possible to entrench constitutional principles because Parliament is sovereign - The sovereignty of parliament asserts that each individual parliament cannot be bound by its predecessors, nor can it bind its successors -> this means that every new parliament is able to amend the constitution as it wishes - All they have to do is pass a new parliamentary statute, the same as any other statute - Moreover, as the government practically dominates parliament and tends to hold a HOC majority -> they have supreme power over the constitution - An example of executive power was demonstrated when parliament passed the Human Rights Act in 1998 (ECHR), no special procedures were needed
The political role of the judiciary does not become significant until we look at the higher levels, this mainly relates to the 3 top levels: 1. The Court of Appeal, Civil and Criminal Divisions - These courts hear appeals from lower courts, either questioning the outcome of cases or in order to clarify a difficult point of law 2. The High Court - This is a collection of courts dealing with civil, not criminal, law such as negligence cases and reviews of government decisions 3. The Supreme Court - This is the highest court in the UK - It only hears appeals from the lower courts, usually the High Court or Courts of Appeal - It mainly deals with interpretations of the law, which will apply widely in society
An organisation whose role it is to undertake research into various aspects of public policy, they are either financed by the government or by private sources (or both) and they are used by decision makers to inform their policy deliberation - They may be neutral ground or have a political orientation - Some think tanks are set up by the government in order to provide itself with expert advice -> The King's Fund advises on health policy -> The Office of Fair Trading helps to protect the needs of consumers
