Variables are an important part of any experiment. Control variables are ones which remain the same throughout and dependent variables are the ones being measured.  The key independent variable is the one variable that you change in your investigation or experiment and it is the basis of your hypothesis. All other variables in your investigation should be kept the same, after all, if you changed two variables, how would you know which one has had the effect you observed?
