A safety device. It is installed inside the furnace plenum where it senses the air temperature that passes through that area. It controls the operation of the furnace within a temperature range, usually between 80° F and 150° F. It prevents the furnace from overheating by turning off the gas supply to the burner assembly. It can also turn off the fan when the burner has been turned off and the temperature drops below the lowest setting.
