There are two types of motivation:

Extrinsic motivation: When someone is motivated by reasons outside of internal rewards 
 

Extrinsic motivation can be affected by external factors like salary, benefits, promotion, and disciplinary action. It can have an immediate and powerful effect, but it doesn't last long. 
Motivation can increase focus and drive, which can boost energy and improve productivity.
