The word autobiography come from the three Greek words autos, bios and graphein, meaning self life write. Autobiographies are usually based almost entirely on the writer’s memory and so are a good account of events as personally experienced, including emotion, rather than just the bare facts which are found in a less personal biography.

Many ‘autobiographies’ of the 20th and the 21st Centuries were partly works of fiction written by ghostwriters. Some celebrities with little writing talent for writing employ a ghostwriter to help them tell their stories. These are often embellished and the facts ‘tweaked’ to increase their entertainment value.
