Ron's Masculinity - Sports - Competition- Neil Is Always Talking About Ron's Strong - Huge Body - Mr. Patimkin's Eating - Saying Neil Eats Like A Bird And Neil Doesn't Like That - The Business- Neil Says He Would Get An Ulcer And Couldn't Bear To Work In A Place Like That
Neil Is Always Trying To Find Where He Belongs And To Break Away From His Societal Class
Neil Has Difficulty With His Identity. He Is Trying To Break Away From His Parental Generation And Fit In To A Higher Class Sector Of Society. The Thing Is - Is That Neil Has Forward Thinking Views- Does Not Believe The Black Kid Will Hurt The Books And Sees Him As An Equal; Reads Margaret Sanger - Who Has Strong Female Leads In Her Novels - But He Does Not Financially Fit In With The Society That He Desperately Wants To Be A Part Of. Also In The Library - Neil Does Not Know Where He Is Going With His Life In That Regard. He Calls His Coworkers "Strange Fellows" And Does Not Feel As If He Fits In With Them. He Sees His Future At The Library As Being Numb And Like A Robot - But He Does Not Know Where To Go From There.
Race- Black Boy In The Library- Neil Is The Only One Who Stands Up For Him. Religion- The Importance Of The Jewish Faith In The Patimkin Family; Neil's Prayer To God And His Satirical Ways Of Going About It. Can't Identify Himself With A Religion - Calls God A Clown - Prays For Answers But The Prize For Meeting God Is To Join The Race For Wealth And Position. Neil Can't Identify With That And He Decides Needs Another Form Of Self-identity Other Than The Religion That Is So Ingrained In The Middle Class System. Neil Also Questions His Identity In Terms Of His Religion- Questioning How Jewish He Is And Unsure Of Where He Belongs In The Religious World. Culture- Part Of Why Neil Likes The Library Is Because It Gives Him A Place Where Culture - Art - And His Fantasies Are Able To Exist And He Can Explore Them In A Safe Way - Devoid Of Risk
