Often published as 1984, this 1949 dystopian novel by English author George Orwell is set in the year 1984 when most of the world population have become victims of perpetual war, omnipresent government surveillance and propaganda. Many of the book's terms and concepts, such as Big Brother, doublethink, thoughtcrime, Newspeak, Room 101, telescreen, 2 + 2 = 5, and memory hole, have entered into common usage.
