Brian Tries To Talk About The Lynching Of Emmet Till At The Dinner Table - But Irene Does Not Want To Talk About It. That Irene Is Not Comfortable Talking About Race Problems And Would Rather Stay Away From The Issue In Order To Remain Safe In Her Capitalistic Bubble.
Milkman Arrives In The Southern Lands - And Thinks - About How 'his Father Had Raved About The Beauty Of This Part Of The Country - But Milkman Saw It As Merely Green - Deep Into Its Indian Summer'. But Once Milkman Meets Reverend Cooper - Who States - 'i Know Your People!' - The Space Begins To Set Him Free. The Symbolism Of Milkman's Journey To His Past Starts To Take On Its Significance At This Point In The Novel - Because Milkman Starts To Learn That It Is What You Have Done With Your Life That Takes Precedence Over What You Own. For Example - He Learns That Old Macon Dead Was So Revered In The Montour County - Not Because He Owned A Farm - But Because He Owned It Without Being Able To Read Or Write Down/Record That He Owned It.
During The Harlem Renaissance - Alan Locke Coined The Concept Of The 'new Negro'. It Was An Invitation To Start 'shaking Off Psychology' And To 'rise Above' Their History. The Characters In The Novels Do Not Need To 'rise Above'; In Fact - When They Begin 'shaking Off' They History And Participate In The 'new Negro' Paradigm - They Lose A Sense Of Self.
