A 1977 novel by American author Toni Morrison. It follows the life of Macon "Milkman" Dead III, an African-American man living in Michigan, from birth to adulthood.

After The Civil War Of The 1860s - America Saw A Period Of Hopefulness Called The Reconstruction. In This - White And Black People Were Thought To Be Able To Live Together In Harmony - But It Did Not Work Out Like This. Instead - By 1870 - The Reconstruction Gave Way To Jim Crow Laws. Brian Tries To Talk About The Lynching Of Emmet Till At The Dinner Table - But Irene Does Not Want To Talk About It. That Irene Is Not Comfortable Talking About Race Problems And Would Rather Stay Away From The Issue In Order To Remain Safe In Her Capitalistic Bubble.
The 'passing' In This Novel Represents 'double-consciousness' In That Irene Believes She Is Passing As A Happily Married Wife - But Her Life Is In Fact Dedicated To Security - Not Love. She Is 'repressed' By Her Own Need For Security And Thus Stifles Her Ability To Love Her Husband And Understand Why He Is So 'restless'. The Third-person Narrative Helps Us To Understand This. It Only Gives Us Irene's Point Of View - And In Doing So - Allows For A Psychological Realist Reading Which Builds Up A Repressive Portrait Of The Protagonist's World.
In Both Texts - The Identities Of Women Are Controlled By Men. In Passing - Irene Dresses Very Quickly In Front Of Brian Because She Knows That He Hates Her Being Late. Clare Conceals Her Whole Identity From Her Husband For Fear That He Will Disown Her. Hagar's Sense Of Self Is Depleted When Milkman No Longer Wants Her.
