The Contrast Is Symbolically Highlighted By The Opposition Light/Darkness. Most Scenes Take Place At Night With Artificial Light - Like Street Lamps Or In Foggy Environments.
Another Important Theme Is That Of Hypocrisy - The Contrast Between Appearance And Reality Which Was Typical Of Victorian Society. The Protagonist Can Be Seen As An Embodiment Of The Victorian Compromise. Jekyll Is The Typical Respectable Member Of Victorian Society But Has A Darker Side - He Projects An Image Of Himself Which Does Not Correspond To Reality.
The Theme Of Double Is Also Reflected In The Setting. The Story Is Set In A City Which Could Be London Or Edinburgh. Both Cities Had A Double Nature: Elegant - Respectable Quarters And Slums Characterized By Crime And Violence. This Duality Is Also Evident In The Description Of The Protagonist's House Which Has Got A Beautiful Front Used By The Doctor And A Sinister Back Used By Hyde.
All The Main Characters In The Novel Are Men - They Are Bachelors - Belong To The Respectable Upper Class And Are In Professional Relationships With Each Other. This Reflects The Patriarchal Victorian World In Which Women Were Second Class Citizens.
