Welding involves bonding the same type of material (metal and metal, or wood and wood) using heat welding, pressure welding, or both. Welders add metal to the welded joint to strengthen the weldment, while a shielding gas like carbon dioxide protects the joint from contamination through natural elements. A weld can be defined as a coalescence of metals produced by heating to a suitable temperature with or without the application of pressure, and with or without the use of a filler material.
