Introduction

Massage therapy is an excellent career choice for individuals who enjoy working closely with others and have the ability to affect positive change through touch.

Massage therapists enjoy many benefits such as the choice of working environments, a flexible schedule, and the ability to make a competitive salary with part-time work.

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that about 25,200 openings for massage therapists are projected each year, on average, over the decade.

If you are interested in becoming a massage therapist, you must meet all requirements set by your state regulatory board before you can practice.

Although requirements vary, most states require massage therapists to complete a formal educational program as well as pass an examination before licensing will be granted.

The examinations most frequently used for this purpose are the National Certification Examinations (NCEs) offered by the National Certification Board for Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork (NCBTMB) and the Massage and Bodywork Licensing Examination (MBLEx) offered by the Federation of State Massage Therapy Boards (FSMTB).

Common subject areas (syllabus / curriculum) for most massage therapy courses are as follows:

  1. Demonstrate knowledge of anatomy and physiology.
  2. Utilize knowledge of pathology to ensure client safety.
  3. Demonstrate appropriate business/record-keeping techniques.
  4. Demonstrate appropriate safety practices.
