Bacteria are vital to the planet's ecosystems. Some species can live in extreme conditions of temperature and pressure. The human body is full of bacteria, and in fact is estimated to contain more bacterial cells than human cells. 

Bacteria come in three basic shapes:
Spherical: These are called cocci, and a single bacterium is a coccus. Examples include the streptococcus group, responsible for “strep throat”.
Rod-shaped: These are known as bacilli (singular bacillus). Some rod-shaped bacteria are curved, and these are known as vibrio. 
Spiral-shaped (spirilla)

Bacteria are the dominant form of life on Earth, along with archaea.
