The purpose of categorizing literature into genres is to help the reader know in advance what kind of story they will be going to read, what they can possibly expect from the story or whether they even want to take the time to read the story. Most stories cannot be pigeon holed into one specific genre but will fall into two or more types. However, the overall intent of the story is the genre it will be placed in. There are many, many different types of genres and new genres seem to be constantly being added.

The Notebook is an example of this genre.
