Some rules:

Adding a negative is the same as subtracting a positive (5 + -2 is the same as 5 -2)

Subtracting a negative is the same a adding a positive (5 - -2 is the same as 5 + 2)

The higher the negative, the lower the number (-5 is lower than -2)

Negative + negative = negative – e.g. -4 + -4 = -8

Positive x positive = positive – e.g. 4 x 4 = 16

Negative x positive = negative – e.g. -4 x 4 = -16

Negative x negative = positive – e.g. -4 x -4 = 16

Positive ÷ positive = positive – e.g. 16 ÷ 4 = 4

Positive ÷ negative = negative – e.g. 16 ÷ -4 = -4

Negative ÷ negative = positive – e.g. -16 ÷ -4 = 4
