The numbers in a sequence are called 'terms'. In the sequence 3, 9, 27, 81, ... each number in the sequence can be got from the previous term by multiplying by 3. In this case, the rule is: multiply by 3. In 2, 4, 6, 8, ... '2' is the first term and '6' is the third term.
Tips:
1. Trial and error is the best option – are the numbers going up? If so, the rule is most likely “Add a certain number” or “Multiply by a certain number”. If they are going down then the opposite is true. The rule will most likely be “Subtract a certain number” or “Divide by a certain number”."
