Tips for solving Position / Direction problems:
1. North (N) is at the top of a map; East (E) is on the right hand side (RHS) of a map; South is at the bottom of a map; West is on the left hand side (LHS) of a map. There are 90° between N and E, E and S, S and W, W and N: so a complete circle is 360°. These four points are called the cardinal points of the compass.
2. To remember the compass points, imagine a clock face and remember this phrase: Never Eat Soggy Worms
– the first letters tell you the four directions, starting at 12 o’clock with North, then 3 o’clock is East, 6 o’clock is South and 9 o’clock is West.
3. Knowing your 9 times table will help you to know how many degrees you should turn.
This is because there are 90° in one-quarter turn, 180° in one-half turn, 270° in three-quarter turns, and 360° in one full turn. That’s your 90 times table, which is the same as the 9 times table, but with a zero added. So, you’ll know that a turn and a quarter would be five-quarter turns: 5 x 9 = 45, so a turn and a quarter will be 450°.
