In the United States, the National Board for Certified Counselors (NBCC) and the National Certification Commission for Addiction Professionals (NCC AP) provide education and certification opportunities. To become a certified addiction counselor, you have to pass an exam. The NCC AP offers different levels of certifcation such as National Certified Addiction Counselor I and II and Master Addiction Counselor (MAC).
The NBCC offers certification as a Masters Addition Counselor. Addiction counselor exams cover such subjects as screening, assessment and engagement, treatment planning, collaboration and referral, case management, individual and group counseling and professional respsonsibility.
