Thrust is the force applied to an aircraft in the direction of flight.

Jet engines produce thrust by:
Mixing fuel with oxygen or another oxidizer in a combustion chamber
Igniting the mixture
Creating hot, expanding gases
Using the expanding gases to produce thrust directly 

Jet engines produce thrust in a similar way to the engine/propeller combination. Both propel the aircraft by thrusting a large weight of air backwards:
One in the form of a large air slipstream at comparatively low speed
The other in the form of a jet of gas at very high speed 
Jet engines commonly develop 9,900 pounds of thrust or more. The General Electric GE9X engine holds the Guinness World Record for the highest recorded thrust, a huge 134,300 pounds.
