Aircraft Design Practice Test: Conceptual Sketch Sizing — Flashcards

Fast review mode: answers are shown by default so you can skim quickly. Hide them if you want to self-test.

Conceptual Sketch Sizing topics include: Takeoff-weight buildup and construction, empty weight and fuel-fraction estimation.

The conceptual sketch is used to estimate aerodynamics and weight fractions by comparing to previous designs.
The initial sizing of an aircraft defines its rough size and weight based upon its intended requirements. The total take-off gross weight is the sum of all the possible aspects of an aircraft. It will depend on fuel weight, crew and payload weight, and also on empty weight.

The conceptual design process consists of four stages:
Pre conceptual design stage
Preliminary sizing
Conceptual design and analysis stage
Applied airworthiness stage

The conceptual design often begins with the mission requirements of the aircraft. Once the requirements are set, the next step is to estimate the design take-off gross weight.
