Weather radar, or weather surveillance radar (WSR), is a system installed in aircraft to detect weather conditions. It provides pilots with information to avoid, not penetrate, adverse weather.

Weather radar is a type of radar that helps:
Locate precipitation
Calculate the motion of precipitation
Estimate the type of precipitation, such as rain, snow, or hail
Forecast the future position and intensity of precipitation
Predict where rain will move next and how intense it will be

Modern weather radars are mostly doppler radars, which can detect the motion of rain droplets as well as the intensity of precipitation.
