A vehicle's charging system has three main parts:
Battery:
Supplies the electrical power to start the engine
Alternator: Generates voltage and electrical power
Voltage regulator: Maintains the battery's charge 

The charging system also provides electricity to run electrical accessories, such as: 
Lights, Audio system, Air conditioner, Window defroster, Radio, Heater, Engine's electrical systems. 

The charging system also generates electrical current flow, known as amperage, to recharge and maintain the charge in the battery. 

Some symptoms of a failing charging system include:
Increased fuel consumption
Dark, sooty exhaust
Fouled spark plugs
Poor idle
